First Solar Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR), billed as the “world’s most valuable solar company”, has announced a new efficiency record for its cadmium telluride (CdTe) photovoltaic (PV) solar cell.

First Solar, headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, manufactures thin film solar panels using CdTe in a vapor deposition process on film because this particular chemical-combination is reportedly the most cost competitive when compared to CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) and A-Si (amorphous silicon). In fact, CdTe is cheaper than CIGS by about 30 percent, and A-Si by around 40 percent.

The solar cell record, 17.3 percent, was confirmed by testing at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, or NREL, one of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)…
